Al Ain's airport is now Tahnoun International. Booking sites disagree on who flies there.
Renamed by presidential order on 11 October; the AAN code stays. The operator puts scheduled service at two airlines and more than 100,000 passengers a year. Flight aggregators list four to six, and some of what they list is not a flight from Al Ain at all.

Al Ain International Airport is now Tahnoun International Airport. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed the renaming on 11 October, in memory of Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, who served as the Ruler's Representative in Abu Dhabi's Eastern Region from the founding of the country until his death in May 2024.
The airport code does not change. It remains AAN.
If you book flights, the more useful part of this story is what comes next.
What the operator says
Abu Dhabi Airports, which runs the airport, puts its scheduled service at two airlines and more than 100,000 passengers a year. That figure was reported by The National on the day of the renaming.
On that day, flight tracking showed the two as Pakistan International Airlines from Islamabad and Air India Express from Kozhikode. That is a single day's picture rather than a published timetable, so take the pair as indicative and the count of two as the operator's own.
What the booking sites say
Something different, and they do not agree with each other either.
One encyclopaedia entry lists six carriers, including seasonal and historic routes, with one of them flagged as unsourced. One flight database lists three destinations. Another lists four, and carries a page date from February. Search Al Ain on a major travel site and you will be shown routes to Dammam, Jeddah, Cairo and Kuwait City.
Open those listings in Arabic and the label on them is رحلات متابعة — connecting flights. They are itineraries sold through Al Ain, not aircraft that fly there. One large site mixes in flights between two Indian cities, which tells you how much care went into the page.
We could not reconcile the aggregators with each other, let alone with the operator. If you are planning a trip, book from the airline rather than from a listing page, and check that the first leg actually departs AAN.
Why this matters more than usual here
Al Ain is being invested in. In September the chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport said approved projects for infrastructure, mobility and public spaces in the city, with planning and design work, exceed AED 5 billion. In the first quarter of this year Al Ain Region recorded the fastest growth in new economic licences in the emirate, up 58 per cent. State Street is building an operating centre here for about 300 people.
People moving to a city ask how they get in and out of it, and right now the published answers to that question contradict one another. The operator's figure is the one with a name attached to it.
What we could not establish
Whether any new routes are planned, and by whom. Neither the operator nor the airlines have published anything we could find.
The passenger trend. We have one figure, more than 100,000 a year, with nothing to compare it against.
Which of the aggregator entries are current and which are leftovers.
How to check this yourself
The renaming was reported on 11 October by The National in English and by Al Khaleej and Emarat Al Youm in Arabic, and announced by the Abu Dhabi Media Office. The two-airline and passenger figures are attributed to Abu Dhabi Airports in The National's report. The AED 5 billion figure is from the Al Ain Future Business Forum in September and appeared only in Arabic coverage. The licence growth figure is the Abu Dhabi Registration Authority release of 22 June 2026.
